The Girls Post
From this week’s series on costumes for young girls.
Bright Young Things in the 1940s
For upper class fashions of the late 1940s you can go no further than Andaz (1949) in which Nargis, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Cuckoo play giddily modern Bright Young Things. The centrepiece of the film is Nargis and the actress looks perfect in … Continue reading

The Tamil Cinema Poster Post
I love that so many old Tamil film posters have just the actresses on them and you get to see different kinds of attire. The first film is Madanamala, where the heroine is a dancer. The second,Devamanohari, features a princess. The … Continue reading

The Princess Post
Vijayaraje Scindia in the 1940s in a gold bordered sari. A style so popular in the 30s/early 40s. Also Durru-Shehvar though admittedly my attention was diverted by the splendid Diana Vreeland.

Random post to document a decade
Shobhana Samarth, probably taken in the late 30s/early 40s. A few posts don’t have a theme but are merely to provide a snapshot of a decade – I normally tag the decade so its easy to follow the tags.

I am a little hesitant to club these three writers together as representative of subcontinental Muslim women writers in the early part of the 20th century. However, though as writers they are quite different, for the purposes of today’s post … Continue reading

Brooch – 1
Brooch 1: An unusual placement of the brooch on the saree blouse. The blouse itself seems to be the square neck kind of style of the 40s. The photograph is of HH Maharani Krishna Kumar (the basis for Rekha’s character in Zubeidaa). [X]
